One month traces his path from siege to sanctuary—through French ports and Paris cafés, across the Atlantic, through New York's tall buildings and down the railroad south—as he tries to understand what war does to a man and what that man does to everyone who loves him.
Told in Hemingway's own voice, May 1937 maps the geography of choice: between witness and abandonment, between the war that won't let go and the marriage he can't save, between the woman who stayed in the long line at the dock and the one waiting in the house on Whitehead Street.
By month's end, he's on the water again. The sea doesn't take sides. It kills without hurry and gives without speeches. That's a relief after a war.
