Description

Ernest Hemingway leaves Madrid and the Spanish Civil War, carrying film cans, notebooks, and the weight of what he's witnessed. Behind him: Martha Gellhorn and the question she asked in a Valencia café. Ahead: the long journey home to Key West, to Pauline, to the life he's already broken.

One month traces his path from siege to sanctuary—through French ports and Paris cafés, across the Atlantic, through New York's tall buildings and down the railroad south—as he tries to understand what war does to a man and what that man does to everyone who loves him.

Told in Hemingway's own voice, May 1937 maps the geography of choice: between witness and abandonment, between the war that won't let go and the marriage he can't save, between the woman who stayed in the long line at the dock and the one waiting in the house on Whitehead Street.

By month's end, he's on the water again. The sea doesn't take sides. It kills without hurry and gives without speeches. That's a relief after a war.

She asked if he would come back to Spain.

This is his answer.

Reader testimonials

“An intimate lens on a world at the edge of change.” — Reader

“A novel that trusts the reader—beautifully structured, deeply felt.” — Reader

“I didn’t expect May 1937 to hit me like this. It feels close—like you’re walking beside Hemingway on his worst and best days, hearing what he won’t say out loud. The writing is lean and vivid, and the places feel real without showing off. By the end, I cared less about the legend and more about the man: stubborn, scared, funny when he shouldn’t be, trying to get the work done anyway. I put it down and just sat there for a minute.” — Reader
